School heads told to abide by rules

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

SCHOOL heads should use school hours to do schoolrelated activities, says acting Northern divisional education officer Iliseva Volai.

She made the comment yesterday following concerns that some school heads used working hours for travelling without informing their district heads.

Mrs Volai pleaded with school heads to abide by the rules which required every school heads to inform district heads about travel before leaving their work station.

“Some Fridays, I visit the Cakaudrove education office and I have seen a few school heads walk in to inform the district head about their purpose of being in town,” she said.

“This is wrong. You are supposed to inform your district heads while at your work station and when approval is given, then you make your way to town.

“We have also received calls from members of the public who have seen headteachers walking around town during school hours.

“If you need to be in town for school purpose, then follow the proper procedure of being released from your work station.”

Mrs Volai also reminded school heads that it was not their role to ask the ministry for school closure due to a particular event or activity being held at the school.

“It is not your role but the school managers are to perform this duty.

“Not many schools are consistent in submitting their monthly reports so we’d like to remind school heads to attend to their reports, submit it to us and we will send it to Suva.”
