A thank you call for senior citizens
FIJI is what it is today because of the tireless contributions and efforts that each of you have contributed to the development of the country.
The Assistant Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Alvick Maharaj made this comments while addressing the residents at Pearce Home in Suva during their Fiji Day celebration yesterday.
The Pearce home was filled with laughter and excitement as the residents joined the minister and his officials to celebrate Fiji's 49th year of independence.
While Fiji Day is about the future Mr Maharaj says it is also a time where we reflect back on the past.
"It is why we wish to commend all senior citizens at this home and those in other parts of the country for your perseverance and dedication despite odds and challenges you may have faced in the past and we all owe senior citizens our respects and gratitude as individuals," he said.
"To those of you staying here at the home, this is an occasion to recognise the valuable contributions you have made and continue to make.
We honour and respect the good work you have contributed to Fiji."
Mr Maharaj also thanked the management and staff members for looking after the senior citizens and for allowing him and his team to spend time with them.
"Government is well aware of the important role that each plays in guiding and supporting our senior citizens on a daily basis.
"Thank you for your patience, smile, helping hand listening eras and for going the extra mile in caring for them."
Pearce Home chairman Mohammed Hassan Khan thanked the assistant minister and his team for their kind gestures especially for remembering the residents during one of the most important time in Fiji's calendar.
Staff members of UNICEF and their children also visited the residents yesterday morning.
