Bhatnagar: There is no vulagi
THERE is no vulagi on Fiji Day or any other day in this country, says Assistant Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Veena Bhatnagar.
She made the comment during a
Fiji Day celebration in Lomolomo, Lautoka, yesterday.
Ms Bhatnagar said Fiji Day was about the powerful and unbreakable bond of national identity.
“We must continue to remove the divides created and perpetuated by politicians based along the lines of ethnicity, religion and province,” she said.
“United by patriotism, we all fly the same flag and sing the same anthem on Fiji Day and that is the spirit of togetherness that should be carried within us not just today but throughout every day.
“Fiji’s independence and subsequent break from monarchial reign is a proud achievement which fosters a feeling of pride and ownership, Fiji faced great challenges and at times upheavals in its short independent history.”
She said despite the challenges, Fiji had grown remarkably over the past 49 years.
The Lomolomo event was organised by the Barara Youth and Social Club.
Senior member Avinesh Singh said in true Fijian spirit, the club had been able to involve every community member in group programs.
“We are very proud to celebrate this day with our members and our community because Fiji is known for its multicultural and diverse society,” he said.
“As a club we try to encourage that and have different cultures and religions represented in our group.
“We want to wish every Fijian a happy Fiji Day and may we all continue to work for the betterment of our country.”
