The Fiji Times

We deliver the news

- Message by The Fiji Times deputy editor Sakiasi Waqanivavalagi

REPORTERS are driven by an obsession of what's new and need to know what's going on so they can tell others about it. Reporters get in touch with the news by watching television, browsing the web, listening to the radio, the TV and keeping their ears open while at the bar or cafe. This obsession is what The Fiji Times newsroom thrives on.

A day in the newsroom begins at 9am where the chief of staff organises a day planner during the editorial conference. This is where the planning of the newspaper content takes place as a team — reporters and photographers — working in union to present a quality newspaper and also feed our online and social media platforms.

Our Northern and Western bureau chiefs liaise with the chief of staff on a daily basis on what is the news of the day.

At the morning conference, the chief of staff determines what is:

Hot news — a list of what's happening today and that's been announced by trusted sources;

Coming next — things to do so as to organise how the news will be covered over the days, weeks, or months to come; and

Selected stories — high added value topics that are presented as issues. This schedule helps plan stories built to add side-information to bigger stories.

For The Fiji Times newspaper it's about churning out news today that our readers will get to read tomorrow so keeping it relevant, factual, accurate, balanced and current is always a daily challenge when we have to contend with other news sources such as televison, radio and online news sites.

It's never a dull day in the newsroom. There are constant discussions between senior people to ensure every issue that affects our population is covered.

There are also two vernaculars — Shanti Dut and the Nai Lalakai — that are published weekly for our Hindi and itaukei readers and the Advertising Features section that works with paid editorial content, an integral part of the newspaper. We also have the Online Team that puts up news of events when it happens as it happens, our sports team that brings the

latest in all sporting events, our photography section, The Sunday Times and Kaila! team and our business section.

All in all the editorial team is in charge of all the news you read in The Fiji Times. In deciding the news content that is gathered throughout the day, the editor has the final say over editorial coverage and decides the direction the paper will take on particular issues. The buck stops with the editor who makes the final decision during an afternoon conference with the chief of staff. Vision of The Fiji Times
