Complementary to the Nawi Island development, a Dry Dock Facility for storage of 250 boats will also be feature at a 11-acre freehold property in Balaga Bay. Phased into 2 parts, the development will include: Phase 1 - the Marina, the Dry Dock and the Yacht Cub Facility with completion marked for 2021. Phase 2 - the Resort/Spa and Private Island homes. The overall project is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Nawi has modified the marina basin shape in order to preserve and maintain additional vegetation and mangroves. Whilst vegetation clearance and landscape reshaping were necessary in the construction planning and approvals process of the Marina it was well covered in the EIA and CEMP approvals as well as in the foreshore lease approvals. Nawi confirms that there has been no excess mangrove removal carried out but rather, from the outset of the project, mangrove rehabilitation has been a top priority. In 2014, Nawi began a replanting program, with the support of schools and corporate organizations, in a proactive endeavor to provide a mangrove protection area in the Bay in order to complement the development and Town’s aesthetics. A Nawi Island Development Environmental Committee (NIDEC) was established in 2017 comprising of local stakeholders such as Tui Nasavusavu and J Hunter Pearls, government agencies including MoE, Lands Department and Savusavu Town Council, as well as, our financing partner, Fiji Development Bank. NIDEC meets monthly onsite to monitor and assess environmental compliance. Nawi remains fully compliant with its Foreshore Lease issued by the Department of Lands and the Conditions of the EIA Approval issued by MoE.
