THE Social Welfare Department has run out of money for family assistance and has stopped accepting applications for help. The $4 million government allocation to the Family Assistance Scheme for the year had been exhausted, Director of Social Welfare Semesa Sikivou said. He added the department would cut down on the 10,000 families already benefitting from the scheme. Salesh had to seek refuge in the grandstand when he was charged by furious Nadroga players. The attack on Sami came in the second spell after a tussle with Nadroga's Kaminieli Tuilawaki. Suvavou Group seizes the factory FORTY Suvavou villagers moved in and took over a cement block-making factory at Lami yesterday. The men sealed off all entrances to the factory and a truck depot beside the complex claiming they were owed more than $1400 inland rent by D Narayan Industries which runs the factory. Barricades were placed across gates leading into the yard and a tent was set up outside the main door to the factory office.

The land bill will stop grievances, minister says THE Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forests, Ratu Josua Toganivalu, told the House of Representatives that changes to the Agricultural Landlord and Tenant Ordinance would enable more "efficient" working of it and remove the present sources of "discontent." He introduced amendments to the ordinance which, if approved by the House, will make the minimum lease on all agricultural land 30 years.
Uniting the islands
SOUTH Pacific Forum countries would have to meet more often in future to discuss common issues affecting them, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Mr Robert Muldoon, said in Suva. The South Pacific was being increasingly drawn into the mainstream of world affairs, he said. "This means we will form new relationships and encounter unfamiliar political doctrines.
