Discipline affects major football teams

- By ZANZEER SINGH

DISCIPLINE is a major factor that has affected major teams this year. After 96 drugs tests taken during the group stage of the Courts Inter District Championship in Nadi, five returned with positive results.

Following that, hosts Nadi faced another problem after eight of their players allegedly went on a drinking spree after winning the final group stage 1-0 win against Nasinu on Thursday.

As a result the Nadi Football Association suspended Ame Votoniu, Patrick Joseph, Josefata Malakai, Jone Ralulu, Vuniuci Tikomaimereke, Christopher Kumar, Husseni Khan and Mataiasi Toma ahead of the semi-final against Labasa yesterday.

Ba faced a similar issue during the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants when nine of its players did not attend camp in preparations for the semi-final and were found drunk.

They were suspended by the Ba FA board of control and handed fines.

Fiji Football Association competition’s manager Amitesh Pal said they had a social responsibility team to council the players, but the district associations needed to take responsibility as well to nip the disciplinary problems in the bud.

“We have the Just Play program which runs in conjunction with FASANOC to spread the gospel to keep the sport clean from the grassroots level,” he said. “After 96 tests in the group stage we got five positives results.

“A positive result does not mean that the player has actually gone through the test and failed. Those players who are summoned for the tests and don’t attend are also deemed as having positive results.”

The Fiji FA has increased the suspensions for players recording positives results from 30 days to three months with a $200 mandatory fine for the player and district as well.
