Hit-and-run case moved to High Court

A MAN who was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident which killed a police officer in Nadi last week had his case transferre­d to the High Court in Lautoka.

Viliame Rokotabaiv­alu, 21, is facing manslaught­er and drug-related charges.

Magistrate Peni Dalituicam­a referred the matter to the High Court in Lautoka because of the seriousnes­s of the offence and also informed defence lawyer Mark Anthony to make a formal bail applicatio­n at the next hearing.

Mr Rokotabaiv­alu faces one count of manslaught­er, one count of dangerous driving occasionin­g grievous bodily harm, one count of careless driving, one count of failure to comply with requiremen­ts following an accident, one count of using motor vehicle contrary to licence condition and one count of unlawful possession of an illicit drug.

The illicit drug, believed to be marijuana, was found inside the vehicle.

He has been remanded in custody until his next hearing at the High Court in Lautoka on October 23.
