People need to ensure that these values were not only remembered but are adopted into their day-to-day lives – Dr Anirudha Bansod

WALKATHONS are quite synonymous with Mahatma Gandhi because he used to walk 15km a day and encouraged others to do the same.

This was highlighted by the head of chancery for the Indian High Commission to Fiji, Sukanta Sahoo, during the Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary walkathon in Suva on Sunday. He said the program was organised by the India Fiji Friendship Forum and was supported by the Indian High Commission.

“This walkathon is also an awareness program to ensure that people are kept fit and also their surroundings are clean as well,” he said.

The forum’s general secretary, Sumanta Rout, said there was a need to promote walkathons in Fiji “to ensure people kept fit and healthy”.

Post Fiji chief executive officer Dr Anirudha Bansod, who was also present at the event, said people were beginning to realise how important Gandhi’s values were.

“People need to ensure that these values were not only remembered but are adopted into their day-to-day lives,” he said.

The forum also took time out to deliver fruits and biscuits to the Dilkusha Home, St Christopher’s Home and the Fiji Society of the Blind.
