Baber to share leadership skills
FIJI 7s head coach Gareth Baber will give an insight into his leadership approaches on and off the field during a talk at the Fiji National University’s (FNU) Successful Leaders in Conversation Series on next Thursday.
The two-hour session will be held at the Valelevu Lecture Theatre at the Nasinu Campus and will be streamlined live to FNU’s other main campuses including Lautoka and Labasa.
The FNU Successful Leaders in Conversation Series is a forum where successful leaders from a variety of professions share leadership principles and competencies that account for their success and achievements.
Baber has achieved international success since taking on the role of Fiji 7s coach in 2016.
His most recent win being the overall 2018/2019 World Rugby Sevens Series trophy.
The 7s team also tasted victory in the Hamilton 7s in New ZEaland, Vancouver 7s, Hong Kong 7s, Singapore and London tournament.
The Welshman said he looked forward to the event next week and the opportunity to share his unique experiences coaching the national 7s gladiators.
“Leadership is a key determinant of success at this level and how we have gone about that,” Baber said.
“Here in Fiji, it has been a very different proposition than what I have encountered in my previous coaching roles.”
FNU pro vice-chancellor learning and teaching, professor James Pounder, said the conversation series would expose FNU students and staff to valuable skill sets beyond the strict confines of their academic and vocational discipline that was vital to success in any field.
“This is the first of its kind and will be an ongoing series with initial plans to host a minimum of six conversations per academic year,” professor Pounder said.
“Gareth Baber was selected as the first speaker in the series based on his performance as Fiji sevens coach, which has now placed him in the same legendary category as the likes of Ben Ryan.”
“He is also a scholar, an Oxford graduate and thinks deeply about his approach to leading the Fiji Sevens team.”
