Coach warns Fijian Drua players

- By ZANZEER SINGH

THE Fijian Drua players have been warned not to play catchup rugby in the National Rugby Championship semi-final against Canberra Vikings in Australia this afternoon.

Fijian Drua had a lucky escape in the final round robin against Queensland Country at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka last week after centre Levani Kurumudu crossed the line in the 80th minute to put his side up 26-24.

While Rohan Saifoloi missed a penalty in injury time at the other end handing the home team a close victory to book its spot in the semi-final.

In round six, Fijian Drua also came from behind to defeat Melbourne Rising 40-36 with winger Jiuta Wainiqolo scoring the winning try in the 75th minute.

Fijian Drua coach Senirusi Seruvakula admitted that they had to put on a last-minute rally in their past two games.

He said it was very risky to play catch-up rugby.

“The boys are still learning but we have to take into consideration to get a good start,” Seruvakula said.

“Then when we take the lead we need to build on the momentum rather than giving away that advantage and then play catch-up rugby at this level.”

The Vikings defeated Fijian Drua 41-28 during the group stage and hold an unblemished record at Viking Park this season where the semi-final will be played.

Last year Fijian Drua beat the Vikings in the semi-final at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Seruvakula said they would have to play smart rugby by maintaining possession and discipline.

“The last time we played them they put on a big score against us,” he said.

“We have done our homework during the week to prepare as to how we are going to play. We just need to play smart rugby and be physical and run direct at them.”
