Hughes brothers in futsal team

BROTHERS Setareki Hughes and Bruce Hughes will be donning the national jumper together for the first time as they represent Fiji to the OFC Futsal Nations Cup in Noumea, New Caledonia.

Setareki Hughes, the elder brother, has been appointed captain of the team and said he was pleased to have his younger brother with him in the tour.

“This is the first time for my brother and I to play together,” Setareki said.

“I am happy that he gets to play alongside me.

“For me it is also my first time to actually play Futsal at an internatio­nal level so I am looking forward.”

The former Rewa midfielder thanked his brother for also thriving in the sport and being able to be chosen to represent the country.

“I thank my brother for working hard as well to get to be where he is.

“For him to be in the team gives me more hope that we can do much better when competitio­n comes.”

The duo come from Navuniyevu Village in Bua.

They thanked their family members for their support.

“Special thanks to our family who have been supporting us from day one,” Setareki said.

“Especially my wife, who has been with me every step of the way.

“Through ups and downs our family has been our main support, although we are away at camp most of the time they are always there for us.”

The team left yesterday for New Caledonia and the tournament proper will begin on Monday.

The team is expected to undergo training in Noumea before taking on the field.
