Heavy rain affects harvest
CONTINUOUS heavy rainfall over the past few days has impeded efforts by canegrowers to harvest their crop.
Ba farmer Khusyal Singh said weather was one factor that no one could plan for.
The Ba grower said he could not force his 10 labourers to cut cane as hornets were present. He said the only way to get rid of them was to burn the whole cane field before allowing labourers to resume cutting.
“We have not been harvesting for the past five days because of the rain and it has affected us a lot,” Mr Singh said.
“I still have 120 tonnes of cane to harvest but not much can be done as the weather was unfavourable.
“We do hope the sun will come out again soon so we can start harvesting again before crushing season ends.”
Mr Singh has been a canegrower since 1958.
