Nasilasila family members support institution’s initiative
THE family of former Fiji 7s playmaker Amenoni Nasilasila has come out strongly in support of the Fiji Corrections Service regarding the jailed former sports star.
Nasilasila hit the headlines after he played for the FCS 7s team during the preparation of the Oceania Sevens Championships in Suva.
Nasilasila’s uncle Vereimi Tovilevu
said they let the law take its course and would support what they thought would be best for his nephew.
“The moment Noni was sentenced to jail, we placed it all in God’s hands and he is under the law now. Whatever happens we will always support him,” said Tovilevu.
Nasilasila played for the Wardens 7s team against Tuvalu recently before the Oceania Sevens Championships.
There were barrage of attacks from organisations condemning his participation because he is an inmate.
“We are thankful for the Wardens’ team officials for giving Noni the opportunity to play for them because it continues to build his experience and knowledge in the sport. We don’t want to see his God-given talent go to waste.”
Nasilasila, who is serving an eight-year jail term for rape, was used by the Wardens 7s team officials because of his rugby talents.
He was a member of the Gareth Baber-coached side that played in the 2018/2019 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, but missed out on the final leg in London and Paris after his arrest.
Tuvalu players said they were happy to have played a very strong Wardens team that included some top players such as Nasilasila.
Meanwhile, Nasilasila’s family will be conducting a fundraising event tomorrow at Namatakula Village to help the rugby star appeal his case.
