Organisers call for children’s immunisation

- By ERONI TUINUKU

THE chief development officer for Athletics Fiji, Antonio Raboiliku, calls on teachers and parents to have their children immunised before they take part in this week’s FMF Chow Games at the ANZ Stadium in Suva. Raboiliku believes the best way to prevent the spread of the measles during the event is to have children immunised before travelling to Suva. Children from across Fiji will be at the annual games.

VILIVO Whippy, 13, wants to finish his primary school athletics career on a high note at the FMF Chow Games in Suva this week.

The Kadavu lad has had a colourful four years of athletics by winning gold medals in his events from the 50 and 75 metres dash in his early grades to the 200m and 400m events.

For the past four years he had been winning gold and is expected to make the final haul this week in his swan song at school. No silver or bronze medal is in Whippy’s medal cabinet.

He is out for a record breaking performance this weekend before he begins another new chapter for Suva Grammar School next year.

“For once this year, my goal is break the record of the 200 metres and the 400 metres,” Whippy said.

“I’m not aware of the time, but I believe I can break the records of the two events in my grade.

“I’ve always wanted to participate and win my events. I’ve never won silver or bronze in my events and I will want to keep that record until I depart primary school,”

Meanwhile, South Pacific sprint king Banuve Tabakaucoro salutes Whippy’s achievement for the past four years.

“I take my hat off to him and I wish I was like him back in primary school,” Tabakaucoro said.

“I hope he goes out there and breaks the records. From his achievements, they paint a perfect picture of how dedicated he is to the sport. With that character and achievements, he has what it takes to achieve his goal.”

Tabakaucoro wished all participants the best before the Chow Games begin.

“I wish the entire athletes well and all the best to the teams. Stay safe in these few days, look after yourself and eat right and when that day comes just go out there and have fun and execute your events well,” he said. The FMF Chow Games is scheduled to begin on Friday at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.
