School campaign
MORE than 20 primary schools in Suva which participated in the annual Suva clean school program at Albert Park were rewarded for their efforts and participation at a prize-giving ceremony to commend their efforts.
Chief guest and chairman of the board of special administrators Suva City Sikeli Tikoduadua said the council would continue to strengthen awareness and environmental programs on a participatory basis with all stakeholders.
He said the council would work closely with all key stakeholders in further developing this Suva clean school program during 2020.
"It is important to understand the link between health and the environment. A good environment certainly leads to good human health conditions," said Mr Tikoduadua.
Meanwhile, Dudley Intermediate School won the overall award for the Suva clean school program for 2019.
Dudley Intermediate program co-ordinator Shenal Kumar said they would continue to be part of the program next year.
"We have many mini-projects lined-up for 2020 as well. So these projects mainly teach us the values about recycling, reusing and reducing," said Mr Kumar.
"We also are trying to carry out this reduction in rubbish. The purpose of this 3R is defeated when we are unable to reduce rubbish.
"So we are going to start with smaller bins and signage so it reminds students to produce less rubbish and to keep the school clean," he said.
The program continues next year with some secondary schools and rural schools to be part of the program.
