Science challenge to boost interest in STEM

STUDENTS from eight primary schools in Suva and Navua participat­ed in a science challenge designed to boost interest in science, technology, engineerin­g and mathematic­s (STEM).

Officiatin­g at the inaugural event this week at the Vodafone

Arena, Education Minister Rosy Akbar said STEM was one way Government hoped to entice students to take up courses that would address our skills shortage and promote study to work in jobready areas.

“The challenge aims to inspire students to consider a future career in science and engineerin­g by choosing to study subjects such as Math, Physics, Chemistry and Engineerin­g in secondary school,” she said.

Ms Akbar added that there was a refocus on how interest in STEM could be generated to all students.

“We are relooking at careers counsellin­g and awareness.

“We want to provide more opportunit­ies for girls in STEM education.

“School leaders have a strong role to play in enforcing the paradigm shift and changing the outlook and approach towards STEM classes in general.”

She said during the challenge, students would be exposed to aspects of science and engineerin­g not usually found in their school environmen­t.

“Students will experience that science and engineerin­g involves creativity, innovation, problem solving and teamwork.”

The schools under the pilot program are Marist Brothers Primary, Nehru Memorial School, Gospel Primary, Suva Primary, Suva Muslim, Vashist Muni Memorial School, Rampur Primary and Rishikul Primary.
