Health is top priority
HEALTHY shopping is top priority for Esther Karanavatu and her three daughters. Ms Karanavatu loves her fruits, vegetables and usually buys them from market vendors or roadside sellers.
She prefers to shop at Hansons in Makoi, or Shop N Save or R.B Patel Centre Point supermarkets.
“I don’t do bulk shopping when it comes to food and even fruits or vegetables,” said Ms Karanavatu.
“I prefer to buy them when it’s needed so that it doesn’t go to waste. However, during the weekends, I buy rice, flour, sugar and a few toiletries. With the rise of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), I would encourage people to eat a lot of organic foods such as fresh produce and meats. Reduce your daily sugar intake to create a stable mood, energy level and also gives you a clearer skin. Keeping hydrated is crucial for one’s health and well-being. Drink a lot of fluids, especially water.”
On a daily basis, Ms Karanavatu says she does some planks to burn calories and two days in a week she does some strength workout with a fitness trainer.
“I could see its effect on my body and gradually I’m starting to lose weight,” she said.
“My only advice to shoppers is to buy fresh meat and fruits and vegetables. Buying and eating freshly-grown produce is the best way to ensure no preservatives or chemicals have been added to your food, plus it tastes better. When you also buy local produce from these market vendors, you’re also supporting them. Money spent is reinvested with businesses and services in your community.”
Ms Karanavatu’s all-time favourite food is any seafood dishes and salads.
