Warning for West promoter

- By SHIRAZ KASIM

SOUTH Pacific Boxing Promotions’ Mukesh Freddy Chand has been slapped with a stern warning from the Boxing Commission of Fiji for bringing disrepute to the sport of boxing in the country.

The former boxer who was endorsed as a promoter by Dr Subhash Appana’s predecessor Bulutani Mataitawakilai in early February last year risks losing his boxing promoter’s licence should he involve himself in any destabilising acts that is deemed to tarnish the image of the sport of boxing in the country in future.

Freddy has been under the spotlight before the Kiran Boxing Promotions that was successfully held at Prince Charles Park on November 30, confided the chairman of the Boxing Commission of Fiji Dr Appana.

“A number of issues were brought to the attention of the Boxing Commission of Fiji and complaints formally raised against him by the boxing fraternity in the country,” Dr Appana said.

“He had the audacity to make live feeds during the Kiran Boxing Promotions on November 30 at approximately 10.25pm despite the fact that no one was allowed to do so and the most concerning part is that during his promotions it is strictly enforced,” a concerned Subhash said.

“We should walk the talk and not otherwise.”

Furthermore Freddy is alleged to have shown disrespect for other boxing programs and was not supportive towards a boxing promotion that had three world title fights.

“He did not respect the 30 days time frame that the Boxing Commission of Fiji expects from promoters because all focus should have been on the current program yet Freddy had the nerve to engage in making announcements and doing promotional hypes on social media which was done from November 13 until the fight night which is a shame.

“The most disgusting behaviour was shown from Freddy when he made an announcement for his boxing program scheduled for December 11 without having received any formal approval from the Boxing Commission of Fiji as is required by the BCF standards and we will not tolerate such behaviour from any boxing promoter in Fiji,” a furious Subhash lamented.

“The Boxing Commission of Fiji gives the official approval and there are necessary policies put in place to avoid a repeat of what was happening before which is not the right way to get things managed if we want things to function effectively.

“We have to ensure that whatever is conducted in regards to boxing is done in the correct and rightful manner hence there are processes that need to be followed, rules applied and for the policies to be consistently followed throughout.”

The establishment of the Boxing Commission of Fiji is to regulate and control professional and amateur boxing in the country and its related matters.
