Call for more sporting activities to attract tourists

- By SITERI SAUVAKACOLO

TO attract more tourists into Lautoka, we must promote sporting groups since we have facilities such as Churchill Park to cater for the demand.

This was the view of Tanoa Hotel Group area general manager Narend Kumar.

The hotel, located along the famous Marine Drive overlooking the Lautoka Harbour, is the only major facility which plays host to major public events and tourists alike in the Sugar

City.

The facility — a part of the growing Tanoa Group of hotels — continues to bloom as businesses slowly expands in Fiji's second capital.

Mr Kumar, who has been with the group for the past 11 years, explained the room numbers continued to increase because of the growing public demand.

“I have been with the Tanoa Hotel Group for last 11 years and we have noticed an increase in business,” Mr Kumar said.

“In 2007 based on demand we added 26 rooms and another 20 rooms in 2014.

“Tanoa Waterfront Hotel currently has 92 rooms which is just enough to cater for the current demand … we have also renovated all rooms and extended the gym to attract sports teams.”

The Lautoka man believed there needed to be more investment on inventory if developments continued to extend in Lautoka. He stated that while Lautoka may not have much tourist attractions the Waterfront mostly banked its services on the three growing segments which are corporate, sports and conference.

He stated the visiting friends and families market was also growing but usually sky rocketed when Lautoka played host to a major public event.

“We can also do more to the visiting cruise liners in terms of activities.

“Some cruise ships arrive on a Sunday and we need to excite them with Fijian cultural activities,” Mr Kumar concluded.
