AFTER spending the Christmas holidays with their families, members of the Fiji 7s team return to camp today for preparations for the second leg of the 2019/2020 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
The disappointment of finishing ninth in Dubai and fourth in Cape Town this month has forced coach Gareth Baber and the team management to quickly find the solution to the problems that caused their downfall in the opening two tournaments.
Baber said the players returned to camp today for a two-day session before they break for the New Year holidays.
“We will do another session on the 27 and 28 of this month. Then we will do that again after we get back from the New Year break from January 4,” Baber told this newspaper after the side returned from Cape Town two weeks ago.
With World Rugby using a new format for the Hamilton tournament (no quarter-finals), the defending series champions will need to hit the ground running in New Zealand.
Fiji will have to win all its pool games to be guaranteed a semi-final spot.
The Fijians are also the defending champion of the Hamilton 7s after they edged USA in a thrilling final early this year.
The Hamilton 7s will be held on January 25, 26.
Pools for the 2020 Hamilton 7s: Pool A: New Zealand, Scotland, USA, Wales. Pool: B South Africa, Kenya, England, Japan Pool C: France, Ireland, Canada, Spain Pool D: Fiji, Argentina, Australia, Samoa
