Water project to benefit 200

- By SITERI SAUVAKACOLO

THE dream of more than 200 residents of Maro, a farming settlement on the Natadola outskirts, to have access to clean drinking water when they open their taps will soon be relished.

This was possible with the bold move taken by their own son, Jahur Khan, who embarked on a 475-kilometre walk around Viti Levu to raise awareness on the much-needed water project.

Though the sugarcane grower did not raise any funds, he was able to convince a number of businesses along the Queens and Kings highways to give items for the worthy cause.

“I did not collect any money but as I walked along I gave pamphlets to business owners and they donated water tanks and some items which will assist in the project,” Mr Khan said.

“A friend of mine saw an earlier article which went in The Fiji Times and he sent over a $4000 borehole pump which will assist a lot in completing this project.

“We are so thankful to all the companies and organisations that rendered their timely assistance which will assist our residents a lot.”

Some of these organisations include GMR Muhammad and Sons Pte Ltd, Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation and Rotary Pacific Water for Life Foundation.

Mr Khan said they had started works on the project and hoped to finish it soon.

He added that about 200 residents had suffered enough from water woes, therefore, it was now time for farmers to stand up and work on the project for the benefit of their children.
