Fiji Bowls prepares world for games

- By NOA BIUDOLE

BOWLS FIJI has started the year on a serious note by preparing for the 2020 World Bowls Championship to take place in Australia.

Bowlers pit skills on the weekend at the Suva Bowling Club lawn in the start of a series of trials to select the best Fiji team to the world competition.

Fiji Bowls coach Maurice Symes began his first round of two trials in Suva with the last trial scheduled in Nadi next weekend.

This is to secure the cream of Fiji’s top bowlers to fly the Fiji flag at the Queensland competition.

“Most of the players represented Fiji at the Asia Pacific Games last year. We have the same number of trialists attending in Suva who will take part in Nadi. This is to see how they react to the different surfaces they will be playing on,” Symes said.

A rolling start for Team Fiji Bowls as trials commenced towards the 2020 World Bowls Championship at the Suva Bowling Club over the weekend.

A total of 16 triallists are attending the three phase trials as Symes looks to find possible combinations.

"We will play different combinations to try and work out who are the best people for the best positions to try and we will do the same thing again next weekend."

Symes expects to be able to put together a formidable team and has no doubt they will perform to expectations despite being one of the minor teams of the sport.

"Fijian bowlers are able to hold their own in nearly every world meet they attend and always come back with medals."
