$13m from new investors

THE stock market in 2019 recorded 945 new investors who entered the market who yielded 1561 trades and contribute­d 7,545,848 shares in volume traded and garnered $13 million in value traded.

In its 2019 stock market review the South Pacific Stock Exchange stated that overall, the new investors demonstrat­ed an impressive contributi­on towards the overall trading statistics for 2019 accounting for 43.96 per cent of the overall number of trades, 27.03 per cent of the overall volume traded and 23.38 per cent of the overall value traded.

Released by the SPX yesterday, the analysis highlighte­d that Port Denarau Marina Ltd (PDM) was the main contributo­r to the increased new investor statistics, exclusivel­y attracting 504 new investors, out of which 467 new investors were recorded on the day of listing itself.

It said second in queue to contribute significan­tly to the new investor statistics was Fijian Holdings Ltd (FHL) accounting for 333 new investors.

According to the analysis majority of the new shareholde­rs that invested in the listed entities during 2019 were individual­s and represente­d 78.84 per cent of the overall new investment by investor type.

It said these individual­s were public servants, private sector employees, domestic workers, retirees, students, farmers and investors who were self-employed.

The SPX also noted that an analysis of the new investors by type of employment indicated that majority of the new investors recorded during 2019 were those employed in the private sector followed by those employed in the public sector.

Third in the queue were student investors and according to the SPX a growth in student investors is certainly another encouragin­g trend noted whereby share investment­s are being considered in early ages for children which would certainly assist them in achieving their future financial goals.

The exchange carried out a review of new investors entering the market last year by age classifica­tion which showed that majority of the new investors fell between the age range of 36 years and 55 years with the age range of 26 years to 35 years standing second in queue. According to the exchange a motivating trend noted is that close to 47.32 per cent of the new investors recorded were below the age of 35 years.
