Schools receive stationery
SIX schools in Lautoka received a timely boost at the start of the new school year with new exercise books and stationery worth $20,000 from the Lautoka Farmers Carnival.
Carnival Committee president Kala Singh said more than 300 students would be assisted under the program.
“We began distributing school packs to needy children especially those from farming communities in 2002,” she said.
“Since then we have helped thousands of children who have come forward with their parents requesting help at the beginning of every school year.
“The main objective of our assistance is to make sure that children from poor backgrounds were able to get school supplies they needed in school.”
She said the organisation had a different approach in 2020.
“Usually we would give out the school packs from our office in Lautoka.
“However, through that process we found that some students were getting more than one pack.
“This time around, we made sure that individual students were getting what they needed.
“We approached the Ministry for Education and their teachers to identify children that needed help with their school supplies.
“Together, we managed to find more than 300 students.”
She said each student received a year’s worth of exercise books and stationery.
Drasa Primary School head of school Vimal Kumar said they were grateful to the organisation for their ongoing assistance.
“They have been a great help to us especially with our students who’s parents cannot afford to buy their school books,” he said.
“We are very honoured to be recipients of this assistance.”
