FAMILY MOURNS LOSS OF ONLY SON

- By REPEKA NASIKO

A LAUTOKA family is mourning the loss of their only son whose body was found near an old service station in Topline, Lautoka yesterday.

Next to the service station was Good News Church where Hasneel Sharma’s father Babu Sharma was attending an early morning church service. Mr

Sharma alerted police after he found his son lying in a bush with bruises on his upper body, missing shoes and a torn shirt.

BABU Sharma of Velovelo settlement was in church when his only son, Hasneel Sharma, was lying dead metres away at an old service station in Topline, Lautoka.

When a church member informed him of his son’s demise, the 51-year-old ran from the Good News Church to find the lifeless body of the 22-year-old with his shoes missing and a torn shirt.

“His eyes were still open so I held him and shook his body,” said Mr Sharma.

“I kept calling his name and kept trying to wake him up.”

Hours earlier, Mr Sharma had watched his son board their neighbour’s taxi for a job.

“It was after 1am. I didn’t know where he was going.

“All he said that he was going with our neighbour to do a job. What job, I didn’t know.

“The last people who saw him alive were a security guard at our church about 3am. He wanted to drink water.”

He said the 22-year-old was self-reliant and independent.

“He did everything and was very active in a lot of things.

“He was a radio announcer and a DJ (disc jockey). He had a lot of friends and people liked him. I don’t believe he had enemies.”

Hasneel’s mother, Angina Devi, said she was home when she received the call from her husband. When she arrived at the scene, Mrs Devi was inconsolable watching police recover her son’s body.

“I don’t know why anyone would want to do this,” she said.

“He was my only son. My beautiful boy is gone.”

Deputy divisional police commander Senior Superintendent of Police Verani Nakauyaca confirmed the discovery was made early yesterday morning.

He said more details would be released once investigations were completed.
