Education Minister Rosy Akbar revealed the pass rate for 2019 external examinations in Rakiraki last Wednesday, with an announcement that a national benchmark for 2020 external examination will be set up soon.

An analysis of examination results by this newspaper revealed 7902 students sat the Year 13 exam and had a pass rate of 79 per cent with 1660 failures.

Year 12 had 3483 failures. 12,900 students sat the exam and there was a 73 per cent pass rate.

As many as 5380 students failed the Year 8 exam and had a pass rate of 69 per cent that equated to 11972. Year 6 had a pass rate of 56 per cent that equated to 10,049 out of 17,945 students who sat for the examination.

Ms Akbar said the marks were not scaled up and said a national benchmark on exam results will be set this year.

“This year we will work with you to set national targets and higher benchmarks. In the coming few weeks we will work with your divisions and schools and will set targets,” she said.

She said every child and teacher would contribute towards the national benchmark.

“The primary schools, your achievements should be appreciated by the secondary schools because they end up taking up your students, your failures and your successful students.”
