QUEEN Salote of Tonga paid an official visit to the Leper Settlement at Makogai. En route, passing through Suva, she stayed at Government House. There she was the guest of the Governor, Sir Ronald Garvey, who entertained her at a small dinner party, which was followed by a film show. The Tongan Queen particularly enjoyed the colour film showing the return of the Fiji Battalion from Malaya. She sailed on the
Adi Maopa to Makogai. During her visit, Queen Salote spoke with many of the patients. Naturally, she took a special interest in Tongans who were receiving treatment. The patients provided entertainment which included Fijian and Tongan items.
Monday, March 8, 1976 Service with punts
BUS passengers between Suva and Rakiraki had to be ferried across the Naqia River in Government punts after floodwaters washed away a 40ft bridge. The bridge was expected to be repaired in one week. The Rakiraki district officer, Subramani Pillay, told The Fiji Times that floodwaters had washed away three steel girders and bent the rest of them.
QVSOB play brilliant rugby
REWA rugby coach Ilaitia Tuisese praised how Queen Victoria School Old Boys played and beat Nausori in the union’s match of the day at Ratu Cakobau Park on Saturday. QVSOB beat Nausori by 22 points to seven in an upset match. The team were helped by the presence of former Suva players Isoa Makutu and Penaia Kadavulevu and Nothern Union centre three-quarter Pio Ropumama Tubui, never allowed Nausori to settle down.

THE Lami Bridge on the Queens Rd took five months to complete after works were stopped six years ago following a discovery that part of one of the embankments was sinking. It was the only part of the Suva-Deuba highway which was not completed when work on the project finished in 1979.
