The tide is slowly changing
WOMEN are undervalued even though they contribute so much to society. These were the words of Fiji Sports Council acting operations manager Elenoa Korovulavula.
Unfortunately in some societies today, Ms Korovulavula, said women were still seen as caregivers and mothers even though they were more than that.
"Women contribute so much to society not just in family, but in community level and the corporate world," she said.
"We are getting a lot of female leaders coming up the ranks and education wise a lot of women and girls are graduating from tertiary institutions so I think the tide is slowly turning."
To celebrate International Women's Day the Fiji Sports Council hosted an hour long zumba session at the FMF Gymnasium in Laucala Bay on Friday morning. "Because we are a sports facility provider we decided to do something that is sports related to celebrate International Women's Day.
Led by Litiana Miller, Ms Korovulavula said this was their first time to organise an event as such.
"We send an email to people that we knew some of our regulars and we also put it on our social media page because we were pressed for time and plus it was a last minute thing."
Despite the drizzly weather she said she was overwhelmed that people still turned up in numbers.
She advised women to stay active as possible and live a healthy life.
"We are in an age where we are challenged by a lot of chronic illnesses and sometimes those sicknesses are within our own control.
My main message is stay active and whatever physical activities you are comfortable with just keep it up because it will add years to your lives.
