Wednesday, March 15, 1961 Policeman tells cunning sword seller to move out

ASENIOR police officer did his part to keep the tourist industry’s nose clean. A sword seller had cunningly placed his swords and masks among grass skirts women were selling on Cumming St. The police officer noticed the handicraft and asked the woman who it belonged to. A young man, who obviously had been waiting to pounce upon some unwary tourist who showed some interest towards the handicraft, admitted it belonged to him. The police officer told him to pack his goods and go to the restricted area for sword sellers on Stinson Parade

Thursday, March 15, 1973 Chiefs dispute Vunivalu title

TRADITIONA­L kingmakers of Natewa Village planned to carry on with plans to install a chief as Vunivalu of Natewa on April 18 despite the installati­on of Ratu Tevita Vakalalabu­re. They said Ratu Ropate, 60, a member of the Valelevu mataqali, was the rightful Vunivalu of Natewa. A spokespers­on for Ratu Ropate’s followers pointed out by tradition Ratu Tevita, a member of the Valenisau mataqali could not succeed his father as Vunivalu of Natewa. This should go by turn to another member of the chiefly mataqali.

Thursday, March 15, 1984 Court blasts prison officials

AMAGISTRAT­E sitting in Tavua Court hit out at prisons authoritie­s for letting a prisoner out to serve his sentence extramural­ly when he had a record of dishonesty. Karam Chand Gosai, who had seven previous conviction­s, pleaded guilty to all four charges. Mr Saunders said if Mr Gosai were in prison he would not be in the Tavua Court for those offences and the people he defrauded would not have been deprived of their money.
