PM bans cruise ships, international events in Fiji

- By AQELA SUSU

NO cruise ships and no international events will be allowed in the country from today.

The ban was announced by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday as part of Fiji’s prevention and containment efforts of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Local events will also be closed to all guests coming in from overseas and ministers, civil servants, permanent secretaries and staff of statutory bodies have been restricted from travelling overseas.

These measures will all be subject to review as the global situation evolves.

The worldwide death toll from the COVID-19 pandemic has surged past 5000, while more than 140,000 confirmed cases of the deadly virus have been recorded around the world. Meanwhile, as Fijians around the world remain alert about the rapid spread of the deadly virus, a Fijian missionary based at Cebu City in the Philippines has revealed how they had to reach out to the homeless in the midst of the deadly pandemic.

Iva Dicau Cagiveitala has been serving as a Catholic Church missionary in the Philippines for the past five years. “We know the risk of exposure is there but in this Lenten season, as Christians we are being called to go the extra mile, to offer sacrifice, to fast and pray fervently,” she said.

NO cruise ships will be allowed entry into the country from today and international events will not be allowed in Fiji.

The ban was announced by

Mr Bainimarama also announced that local events would be closed to all guests coming in from overseas, and ministers, civil servants, permanent secretaries and staff of statutory bodies would be restricted from travelling overseas, barring exceptionally critical circumstances.

“We also highly discourage all

Fijians from travelling overseas. If you do choose to travel anywhere outside of Fiji, you may be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon your return to Fiji, even if you are not displaying symptoms of COVID-19,” he said.
