“INCIDENTS of violence in schools is heard about almost everyday.”

The revelation was made by Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar while officiating at an International Women’s Day celebration in Suva on Saturday night.

Ms Akbar says incidents of violence has been present within Fijian societies many years ago.

“I will say this again, where do our children learn this from.”

“Social media, our homes or communities. What are we doing about this, don’t just say I am just a housewife; no you’re a leader in your own home.”

She reiterated that the fundamental value enshrined in all religions was respect for one another.

“Use the values that our religion teaches us.

“We will need your support to say that now is probably a time of a revolution, we cannot take things as they are,” Ms Akbar said.

“Let’s come up with a universal curriculum where we don’t teach the values pertinent to one faith, every child in Fiji must know what different faiths teach.”

TEACHERS going against and breaching the ministry’s social media policies will be counselled, says Education Minister Rosy Akbar.

Ms Akbar said there had been some teachers under the spotlight for this.

“We have teachers who are very techno, and you have issues and people send me these screen shots — this is what this teacher is saying on social media,” she said.

“We do have a few of you who try to go against the policies and breaching of policies will see teachers getting counselled.”

Ms Akbar said teachers needed to understand that they were employees of the ministry.

“But you got to understand you are part of the ministry, it is not my ministry alone,

“The Ministry of Education is the largest single employer of civil service in the country. We get the largest chunk of national budget so obviously the expectation from us is higher than any other ministry, so your role is important.

“The way you discipline your students and the way you portray yourself in the community.

“Teachers have also been under the spotlight.”
