NO THREAT TO FOOD SECURITY

- By LUKE NACEI

THERE is enough stock.

That is the reassurance from the FMF Foods Ltd managing director Ram Bajekal as countries battle against the deadly coronavirus disease.

Mr Bajekal made the statement during the Fiji Chamber of Commerce and Industry “Business response to Coronavirus” meeting at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva yesterday.

He also urged consumers to refrain from panicking.

“I just want to assure the gathering here that as far as we are concerned I think that’s not something people need to worry about,” he said.

Mr Bajekal said although the company had some packaging materials that were to be imported from China they were working round-the-clock on how to go about it.

“I think there is no need for panic there is enough stock and there are some packaging materials that we depend on from are from China and we are working hard on that but it’s not something to worry about at this point in time.”

He said they would ensure that every retailing outlet was stocked.

“Our senior managements are getting into the meet and greet operations to make sure there is no running out of stocks by any one single retailer or customer trying to grab stocks and try to profit from it.

“We are making sure that the distributions are equitable and the stocks are made available.”

Mr Bajekal yesterday urged government to assist with their shipping schedules.

“The related issue I want from the Government, even though there is a lot of chaos from shipping schedules and certain airlines schedule as well I think every consignment that comes here we need to ensure that the discharge of those goods or the formalities around that are absolutely turned around very quickly and all the agencies must also perform.

“Because the last thing we can afford at this point in time is any of our people spending time in following up with agencies on anything we require in terms of compliance.”
