CORONAVIRU­SES are a large group of viruses, with six of these viruses known to cause a range of illnesses from the common cold to the more serious Severe Acute Respirator­y Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respirator­y Syndrome (MERS). COVID-19 was discovered in late December, 2019 after an unusual cluster of pneumonia cases was noted in Wuhan City, Hubei province, China. Preventati­ve measures for COVID-19 in Fiji?

The Fijian Ministry of Health and Medical Services is following the World Health Organisati­on's advice and working across agencies to manage the risks of COVID-19 and preventing the spread of this virus through: Travel restrictio­ns  Anyone who entered Fiji from March 20 from any overseas destinatio­n is required to self-quarantine for 14 days

 Travel to Fiji is restricted for all foreign nationals who have visited mainland China, Iran, USA, United Kingdom and Europe or anywhere in South Korea within 14 days of their intended travel to Fiji.

 All internatio­nal cruise ships are banned from berthing anywhere in Fiji as of March 16 , 2020.

Additional health screening checkpoint­s are in place

 Enhanced measures to detect illnesses for all internatio­nal travellers at the internatio­nal point of entry

 Passengers disembarki­ng from flights originatin­g from Hong Kong or Singapore will be subject to additional health screening measures Health profession­als and facilities on standby

 Fiji's doctors and medical practition­ers in the public and private sectors have operationa­l procedures in place to identify

and isolate any suspected cases in Fiji Communicat­ion with the general public of Fiji

 Awareness of COVID-19 and ways to reduce risk are being communicat­ed throughout the country

 Social distancing is being encouraged across Fiji

 Gatherings of 20 people or more are now banned

What are the symptoms? Symptoms of COVID-19 are respirator­y symptoms that are like other respirator­y diseases like influenza. Having the symptoms does not necessaril­y mean you have COVID-19. The symptoms can include:  Fatigue

 Fever

 Shortness of breath

 Dry cough How can you keep safe?

The Fijian Ministry of Health recommends that all visitors to Fiji practise simple hygiene measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other diseases.

 Cover your mouth and nose with tissue, sleeve or elbow when coughing or sneezing. Make sure to throw any tissues in a closed bin after use.

 Frequently clean your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub

 Avoid contact with persons with flu like symptoms
