Saturday, June 7, 1973 Cane may help

A Supreme Court judge yesterday made an outspoken attack on Fiji’s growing number of violent criminals.

Mr Justice Clifford Grant called them bullies and cowards. He made it plain he supported the Government's attitude to corporal punishment.

In the Supreme Court in Suva, Mr Justice Grant confirmed punishment of nine strokes of the cane for Samisoni Kasanaqiqi (27)

The ship that got away

UN unmanned Korean fishing boat floated off a reef in the Lau Group where she had gone aground on Monday night, only to go aground on another reef 26 hours later after drifting 35 miles. She is the 180-ton Sam Song No 77, which went aground on Argo Reef about 25 miles south-east of Lakeba on Monday night and is now aground at Nayau Island.

The Marine Department ship, Daunivosa, took her crew of 28 off on Tuesday and salvage operations were to begin later this week.

Tariffs please Fiji Government

The Government hopes a new tariff system will enable Fiji to export such products as soap, clothing and confection­ery to Australia.

The Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mohammed Khan, indicated this yesterday in comments on the new Australian system. Australia will charge duty 10 per cent below the general rate on a variety of imports from developing countries including Fiji

Mohini meets minister

THE Minister for Health, James Shankar Singh, nurses six-year-old Mohini Lata at the Fiji Crippled Children's School laboratory in Suva during a visit he made to present a certificat­e in orthotics and prosthetic­s to Fiji's first locally trained orthotic-prosthetic technician, Deo Prasad.

Mr Prasad, a former carpenter, gained his certificat­e from the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Technician­s in Orthotics and Prosthetic­s in New York. Also in the picture is the second secretary at the American Embassy, Mr Robert

Becker, who said Mr Prasad had received a grant for further studies in the United States. The grant from the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare, will enable Mr Prasad to study at New York University's post-graduate medical school. Mr Rob Altman, has supervised the laboratory since it opened in February last year.
