Champ set to defend rugby title

- By ERONI TUINUKU

FORMER Nadroga rugby representatives will show their full support to their fellow comrades when they defend the prestigious Farebrother trophy against Suva tomorrow.

The Old War Horse (Waqe Osi) Association has been supporting the team officials behind the scene through words of encouragement and motivating the players on the importance of defending the Farebrother at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka tomorrow.

Former Nadroga captain Paula Biu said every player that dons Nadroga jersey knows how importance it is playing in their home ground.

“In my opinion Suva will be the team to beat and Nadroga to be the underdogs because in the previous records Suva is the only team to have beaten Nadroga for the past two to three years.

“For Nadroga the Farebrother has been part of their history and their vanua so they will defend it until the final whistle and they won’t give it up easily,” said Biu.

Biu is aware of the capabilities in the Suva line-up but he said Nadroga would always be Nadroga on their home ground especially when the Farebrother trophy was at stake.

“In local rugby competition, the Farebrother is the holy grail of provincial rugby and Nadroga will keep it like its theirs, but Suva has the capabilities to create an upset at Lawaqa.

“However the team that makes less mistakes will come through victorious and I wish both teams the the best in tomorrow’s meet,” he said.

The Old War Horse Association is formed by some renowned players such as Ratu Mosese Volavola, Timoci Volavola, Dale Tonawai, Asi Mocelutu, Tiko Matawalu, Paula Biu, Sikeli Votonisiga, Etika Tovilevu

and Paula Karatu to name a few.

Meanwhile the Skipper Cup season will kick-start tomorrow and the first double header match between Farebrother holders Nadroga and Skipper Cup champion Suva will go head to head on July 25 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka and Naitasiri will host the underdogs Lautoka rugby team at the Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori.

The Nadi Jetsetters will face the Yasawa ruggers at Churchill Park in Lautoka and Namosi will take on Tailevu at the Thomson Park in Navua.
