FASANOC boss calls for support for Fiji’s campaign

- By MAIKELI SERU

FIJI Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) president Makarita Lenoa has called on Fijians to support Team Fiji officials and athletes in their 2020 Olympic Games campaign in Tokyo, Japan next year.

Lenoa was among sporting executives who attended Fiji’s first ever Olympic Games flag raising ceremony at the Olympic House in Suva yesterday.

“The flag raising ceremony this morning is quite significant for FASANOC because FASANOC is behind athletes who have been preparing for the Olympic Games. Some are preparing for their qualification. The men’s and women’s sevens teams have qualified and it’s an exciting day,” Lenoa said.

The games theme of ‘#StrongerTogether’ has been used to motivate and inspire the world, corporate entities, and athletes in supporting the games after the infection of the COVID-19 pandemic which postponed the games to next

July.

“The campaign for stronger together which is being led by the IOC is also being picked up by Fijians and Team Fiji for our campaigning behind the athletes. If we can all get behind them we know that they can go through this journey right to the land of the rising sun where we hope they will be able to celebrate and display what they have been preparing for.

“If we have been allowed to follow our timelines as planned for this time on the calendar year, we would have been in Japan for the 2020 Olympics.

“In raising the flag of Japan and Fiji and the IOC, we are deeply reminded of the power to rise and expand to create a future we desire.

“Team Fiji looks forward to participating in the 2020 Olympic Games and we invite you to keep this spark of light burn brightly in the hearts of athletes and those around them.”

The Tokyo games is scheduled to start with the opening ceremony on July 23, next year.
