Tips from the lady who runs a kitchen

- By ATASA WILLIAMS

EAT healthily to be healthy because you are what you eat.

These are the words of Felichya Kayes featuring in this week's shopper.

Mrs Kayes, an entrepreneur, is the owner and founder of Aroma Kitchen

Aroma Kitchen specialises in making traditional Indian style homemade chutney, pickles and dips.

She says her products are traditional Indian condiments made from locally grown organic fresh fruits, vegetables and mixed traditional spices.

"The idea to start this business was my husband's — a gluten intolerant since there are not much gluten-free products available in the market," Mrs

Kayes said. From there she started making gluten-free and healthy dips and sauces for everyday use.

"These are versatile ingredients to have in the kitchen.

"Apart from Indian dishes it can be used on cheese, crackers or vegetables, meat sauce, seafood, rice, pasta, sandwiches or wraps and even over ice cream.

Mrs Kayes lives in Pacific Harbour with her husband Stephen and their daughter Zoe. This week she shares her shopping tips with us.

GROCERIES shopping for the Kayes are done on a weekly basis. Felichya Kayes says they usually do their groceries shopping at New World Damodar City Centre because they have products that best suit her family as well as friendly and helpful staff members. Fresh Choice Supermarket for fresh vegetables and Cost U Less for meat and cleaning products.

Their weekly shopping list includes vegetables, milk, eggs, cereals, meat (chicken, beef, lamb), fish (occasionally), cooking oil (grape seed oil, olive oil, and rice bran oil and herb oils), toiletries, canned foods, cleaning products, fruit juice, brown rice, basmati rice, cheese, butter, frozen seafood, peas, mixed vegetables, gluten free cereals, bread, pasta and flour with a $300 to $400 budget.

“We try to eat healthy as much as we can and always try to choose healthier options that are available while shopping. My husband is on a gluten-free diet and sometimes it is tricky to find certain products at just one supermarket,” Mrs Kayes said.

She says the whole family goes shopping as they all have roles to play. If there’s something Mrs Kayes has learnt over the years that is to always check the products’ expiry dates before she purchases it.

“Check your fruits and vegetables make sure they are fresh because you pay a lot of money purchasing it.

“Always check your receipt and make sure the right price is charged because sometimes you buy items that are on special yet the prices are still the same”.
