Notable achievements for Fiji rugby
WHILE so many people are harping about Francis Kean’s removal from the FRU’s rugby chair committee, I would like to mention a few notable progress and achievements that occurred during his term in office.
Super Rugby matches were played here at home. Not just any matches but the quality of New Zealand teams; the Crusaders, Chiefs and the Highlanders have all brought their home match here.
Revamping the local rugby competition. Top eight teams for the premier (Skipper Cup) division and the Vanua Championship for the minor and also stipend or allowances for all players making our local league appear more professional and developed compared with the past.
New Zealand Maori after ages recently toured our island and our Flying Fijians did not disappoint.
Our school boys rugby now have a much more improved rugby path. As evident in our Drua, Warriors and Latui teams predominantly made of Deans products – the likes of Jiuta Wainiqolo, Jone Vatuwaliwali, Alifereti Loaloa, Mesu Dolokoto, Vasikali Mudu, Jone Manu, Tevita Ikanivere, Simi Kuruvoli, Aisea Natoga and Mosese Qolisese to name a few. Some of these boys have debuted in the national white jumper.
Last but not least, Fiji’s famous first Olympics gold medal that was won by our sevens boys in Rio some four years ago.
There are other achievements that I may have missed out on. From how I see it, he has done quite well and now his successor has some huge shoes to fill.
Thank you Mr Kean for your tireless contribution towards Fiji rugby.
