Duituturaga: Party to decide on new leader
THE Social Democratic Liberal Party will decide who will lead them to the 2022 general elections at their annual general meeting on November 28.
This was the word from SODELPA general secretary Emele Duituturaga after a special general meeting held at Novotel Suva Lami Bay yesterday.
She said they have advertised the positions of leader and deputy leader for the party and applications would close on August 12.
Ms Duituturaga said on September 12 the SODELPA management board would meet to endorse the selection committee and the interview panel for the two positions.
“The selection committee will consider the applications, look at them, vet them, shortlist them and also invite comments from our 28 constituency councils,” she said.
Ms Duituturaga said they would now consult widely with their constituencies so that they could involve professional experts who would then form the interview panel for the two positions.
“As of Thursday, the members of the management board who are part of our 28 constituency councils — they are the representatives who form the management board.
“They were given 21 days to submit their input on their criteria for party leader and deputy party leader.
“They were also invited to propose nominations for who should be on the selection committee and who should be on the interview panel.”
She said anyone except the general secretary, could apply for the two positions.
“There has been a very strong opinion that if the general secretary stands they will not be looking after the office properly.
“So anybody can apply, we’re opening it to a level playing field.
“Our constitution says it may be the same party leader or it maybe somebody else.”
