A new life ahead

Finding God, a long-serving prisoner of Suva’s Korovou Prison, has decided to go straight and begin a new life following his release from custody last week. Iliaseri Saqasaqa, 28, was released from jail after serving 10 years for many crimes and was baptised yesterday by the Reverend Dr Samuel Berwick at the Bible Baptist Church in Samabula. Saqasaqa, a resident of Qauia in Lami, was one of the leaders of the infamous 1980 New Year riots at the Korovou Prison.

Fiji’s gross domestic product grew from 90 million in 1962 to 140 million in 1968, and the Government hopes to raise it still further to 187 million in 1973. This was revealed in the leaflet, Fiji Facts and Figures, which summarises economic conditions in Fiji issued by the Government’s Bureau of Statistics.

Thursday, July 26, 1979 Hotels face shutdown

Nadi Town Council has threatened three hotels with closure for failing to connect with a trunk sewer and thus causing a health and smell nuisance. This was decided by councillor­s at their monthly ordinary meeting.

Dealers upset by “potbelly”

Duty-free traders expressed shock and concern yesterday over the damage to their name from a report that one “pot-bellied” Nadi dealer steward` tried to propositio­n an Australian air stewardess. Nadi Duty-Free Merchant Associatio­n, Colin Weaver, who is also a senator, said members were very concerned.
