Boxing help for children

- By MAIKELI SERU

IN a first for Fiji, Uptown Boxing Club in Suva has started a boxing training program for children and young people.

In an era where social media, abuse and negligence of children persists, the gesture of the club to teach children the art of boxing is a food for thought for Fijians.

Spearheading the move is Fiji’s professional boxer Sebastian Singh, who is also looking for a return to the ring after a short break.

“Our gym in Samabula, Suva, will be open daily to teach children and young people who are interested to learn boxing,” Singh said.

“It is for several reasons. First is to teach boxing as a sport. It could be a form of self defence for kids against the unwarranted stuff that are happening to children nowadays.

“We thank Jasons Realty for helping us by donating boxing equipment such as boxing gloves, mouthguards, straps and other equipment to help us help Fijian children. We urge parents to allow their children to come because this will help them mentally, help them get out of depression, stress and help their physical fitness. Not everyone will become boxers. All we want to do is to introduce boxing and to teach the basics of boxing to children. We are also looking at street kids. Most of them are products of broken homes, are orphans, and some were chased from their homes.”

Jasons Realty’s Shalvin Singh, while handing over the equipment said boxing was a way of life and their partnership to help teach boxing would help nurture good future Fijians.
