Good roads

-

THERE are a number of letters from people living in Ovalau demanding good roads. It has led me to wonder how much income tax the people of Ovalau contribute to government consolidated revenue. In my opinion, very little or most likely close to zero. However, they do feel entitled to all things good. How much income tax do the people and businesses of the Western Division contribute to consolidated revenue? Probably the majority.

But, the people of Lau, Tailevu, Cakaudrove, the maritime areas etc feel entitled to the good stuff from the government. At least, I can safely say that is what the people running previous governments seemed to think and feel.

“Entitled” is the operative word. I believe if you feel entitled, then you have to pay. So those who feel entitled, I believe it’s time you start working the land and contribute to government coffers then only will you be entitled to demand things from the government.

And how do you do that? Getting off the chair and getting off the grog will be a good start, instead of waiting for government handouts.

I believe governments do not put money in your pockets. It is you who put the money in government coffers. That is what happens in countries which are doing well. I believe it is a bit rich for people to demand things from the government when less than one per cent of the people pay income tax. It is not rocket science.
