FTU western sports tournament

-

RAKIRAKI will be a hive of activity as the Fiji Teachers Union Rakiraki branch hosts the 2020 western zone sports tournament at Wairuku Primary School. Rakiraki branch will host Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, Nadi and Nadroga and members will take part in soccer, men’s and women’s volleyball and netball.

The branch has also organised a family fun day and kids will have access to bouncy castle. The branch will also have a cakecutting ceremony to mark the close of the Pinktober month. The hardworking and dedicated executives of Rakiraki branch led by Hazrat Ali, Asishwar Prasad, Mohammed Shazil, Vishal Goundar, Richard Kumar, Shavneel Singh, Pillay Goundar, Arvin Kumar, Parmendra Kumar and Mohammed Shafeel deserve accolades for working round-the-clock to make today’s sports day a success.

The FTU national president Muniappa Goundar and general secretary Agni Deo Singh, with the elected members of the national executive, will also be in Rakiraki. At this juncture, I commend and thank The Fiji Times for professionally reporting on the 90th FTU AGM held at Rishikul College on October 17!

Nadawa, Nasinu receive them.

In most cases, the victims never get anything back and I believe that is very unfair. People who buy the stolen items should also face a harsh penalty. People who do this are simply aiding and abetting a crime. We have to put a stop to this. SURESH CHAND

Nadi researchers at the University of Leicester, ocean water temperatures may increase by nearly 11 degrees Fahrenheit as early as 2100. When that happens, the ocean phytoplankton that now produces about two-thirds of the oxygen in our atmosphere will cease photosynthesis — and make no more oxygen — likely resulting in mass mortality of humans and animals on a global scale.

#4 – Rising sea levels. National Ocean Service says global warming is melting ice, rising sea levels by another inch every eight years. You can see this in the South Pacific where the houses at the shores are getting submerged in record numbers. In addition, global warming increases the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere, leading to heavier rainfalls and more severe storms.

#5 – Ecosphere imbalance. 150 experts who met at the UN in 2019 warn that more than half a million species are likely to become extinct — which, depending on what species disappear, can range from sad to dangerous. For instance, if bees go extinct, the loss of pollination could cut our crop production in half. Not to mention no more honey.

Some of you may believe that one or more of these five items is not true or find links to the many articles you can find online that dispute everything I’ve said above — or call me an idiot for believing in these things when you do not. All I am saying is that these are some things I worry about.

I asked my wife what she worries about the most. She said it was whether Sushant Singh Rajput’s murderers will be caught. I asked her who Sushant was and she has not spoken to me since. Now I have one more thing I worry about — whether she will make any sweets for Diwali. Ouch! Maybe I can convince her to — I saw this beautiful saree at Jack’s…

Nadi of Canada... what a surprise! I always thought that Hindi and iTaukei were somewhat too complicated, and using French instead was a smart compromise.

Perhaps we could start singing the Fijian national anthem in French and English as well? That may solve the sensitive issue that keeps popping up every now and then. After all, French is the language of love (that’s what the French people say). What say, parofisa Qereti?
