UN launches new ‘central’ website
A MAJOR milestone was marked by the United Nations Pacific Office following the launch of the “One UN website” at midnight on Thursday last week.
UN communications and advocacy analyst at the Office of the Resident Co-ordinator Sanya Ruggiero, during a tour of the new website, highlighted this was a major buildup towards United Nations Day next Saturday.
“The theme for the UN75 commemorations this year is ‘The future we want, the UN we need.’ The creation of this website is one concrete step in that direction,” she said.
“Some of the key areas we want to address through the UN in the Pacific Website is awareness raising, advocacy, alliance building and accountability to the people we serve in our member countries.
“Of course, all of this with the goal of highlighting the most vulnerable groups in our communities, as well as key issues affecting our Pacific Island Member States — whether that’s the climate crisis; greater efforts around disability inclusion; violence against women and girls; and many more.”
Ms Ruggiero said while several UN agencies operating in the Pacific had their own websites, the One UN website was a hub of centralised information around which UN agencies worked in each of their 10 countries which included Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia , RMI, Palau, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Tonga, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Nauru.
“Through a storytelling approach, the website is also envisioned to be a home for engaging stories told through the eyes and lived experiences of our partners across Government, civil society, our donors, youth, the private sector and other key development partners.”
She also emphasised the importance of UN’s partnership with relevant media outlets in the country.
“The media is one of the strongest and important partners that we have. Media creates that bridge between the UN Secretariat and the people.”
