School heads receive 50th anniversary coins
MORE than 230 school heads of primary and secondary schools including special schools from Lautoka to Vatukoula were handed the commemorative 50th anniversary coins at Tilak High School recently.
Addressing the various school heads, Reserve Bank of Fiji chief manager economics Petaia Tuimanu said the RBF was honoured and privileged to be a part of the historic occasion.
“This is a happy occasion for the central bank as it marks the culmination of a project that started about three years ago,” he said.
“It also represents the bank’s contribution towards our national celebrations on the occasion of Fiji’s achievement of 50 years of nationhood.
“The work on the commemorative currencies started in 2017 and preliminary deliberations considered various options such as sports and the evolution of the domestic economy to feature on the currency.
“We finally settled on a theme that showcased Fiji’s individualism as an independent nation and emphasised elements from her past and its future.
“The design of the 50 cent coin which will be distributed today was clear with a flag on one side and the coat of arms on the other.”
He added the thinking behind the RBF’s commitment to fund and give the 50 cent commemorative coin to every school student in the country signalled the importance of education for nation building.
Mr Tuimanu urged the school heads to ensure the 50 cent commemorative coins were given to every school student.
“It’s something special that they would remember this occasion by and hopefully raise the level of patriotism for the country.”
