Time disruptions

- By ABISHEK CHAND

VODAFONE Fiji has advised the public they could face multiple incidents of desynchronisation of the time on their electronic devices such as laptops, computers and mobile phones because of the changes in the start and end date of daylight saving time (DST) this year.

According to a statement from the company electronic devices such as laptops, computers and phones had an inbuilt clock (date and time) which operate on propriety operating software installed by the device manufacturers such as Microsoft, Samsung, Apple etc.

“These inbuilt device clock are by default set to the normal standard time of the country that is selected in the device settings.

“If a country decides to implement DST then the device time needs to be adjusted accordingly to reflect the daylight saving time.

“In Fiji’s case, the DST adjustment is by one hour.

“To do this all electronic device manufactures need to apply a DST software patch so that the device time will update automatically to reflect the daylight saving time,” it stated.

The company added to ensure minimum disruption to the public as a result of DST, countries which implemented DST needed to ensure the start and end days for DST remained the same every year.

“Keeping the DST start and end days constant every year, ensures that the DST software updates installed in electronic devices once is activated automatically every year at the same exact time with minimum disruption to the public.”
