‘Things not done well from start’

- By SERAFINA SILAITOGA

AN investigation has been launched into alleged corrupt practices in relation to the $1.1 million Savusavu Market Project.

Savusavu Town special administrator Justin Hunter revealed this to ratepayers during a consultation in Labasa with Local Government Minister Premila Kumar on Monday night.

He said things were not done well from the beginning of the project.

Ratepayers asked about progressive works of the Savusavu market and the condition of the temporary sheds that vendors currently used.

Mr Hunter told the ratepayers that no architect was involved in the plan.

He also claimed some funds allocated for the project had allegedly gone missing while some had been used “inappropriately”.

“The project didn’t involve any architect and so we were not happy too with the design,” Mr Hunter said.

“So there is an ongoing investigation and we are getting an architect next week to look at the plans.

“COVID-19 also delayed things and that is why we are still working on the project but be rest assured, it will be completed.”

Questions sent to the Ministry of Labour permanent secretary Osea Cawaru last month regarding the condition of the market remain unanswered.
