Activist dedicates medal to victims

- By ARIETA VAKASUKAWAQA

THE passion with which child activist Adi Lanieta Burasia Matavesi tackles child sexual and physical abuse issues in Nadroga was recognised by the State when she was awarded the 50th Anniversary of Independence medal yesterday.

The former nurse was among 41 recipients who were awarded at the State House.

Originally from Vunavutu Village, Nadroga, Adi Lanieta has been part of the provincial council’s inter-agency committees and a child abuse activist for the past 15 years.

“The cases of child abuse since I started advocating on the issue in 2005 have dramatically increased,” she said.

“I’ve devoted my time and resources to looking after child victims of abuse because they need someone to walk with them, cry with them and love them.”

Adi Lanieta said she did not publicise her work because it was something she was passionate about.

“But I am honoured to be recognised with this medal.

“I dedicate this medal to all the orphans and victims of child abuse I have worked with.”

She said she had a passion to help people because she had worked as a nurse for 40 years.

“I think this is why God still needs me here to help children who have been victims of abuse.

“Fiji needs more people to advocate on children’s issues because they need us.”
