ACP Khan: Random drug raids for inter-island vessels

- By VISHAAL KUMAR

THE Fiji Police Force and the WATERPOL Division will continue to conduct random searches for drugs on inter-island vessels throughout the festive season, says police chief operations officer ACP Abdul Khan.

He added major drugs found on these vessels were mostly marijuana and the force was working with maritime stakeholders to strengthen monitoring of our ports of entry.

“We have strategies in place and the support of the public has been great in terms of the information being shared to us where we are able to act and make arrests,” ACP Khan said.

“We anticipate some will try to earn quick money for the festive season through illegal means and we have in place strategies to minimise these illegal activities.”

Meanwhile, about 5000 plants believed to be marijuana were uprooted on Kadavu earlier this month where the raids were conducted in Levuka, Yale, Naioti and Nacomoto villages.

In June this year, 14,000 plants with an estimated street value of more than $40 million were found on the island and destroyed by police.
